“JACK” is intended to provide developing school and community symphonic wind bands with an accessible musical drama suitable for performance as part of a family or school concert. Parts of varying difficulty provide an interesting challenge for more experienced players while taking into consideration the limitations of a developing band’s younger musicians.
Recurring themes and simple harmonies have been used to enhance the musical appeal for children. At times, the musical accompaniment is deliberately sparse in order not to detract from the storytelling. Phrases and musical sections have clear beginnings and endings, allowing simple cuts or repetitions to be made when needed to accommodate a theatrical performance with actors.
An effective narrator is key to the success of the performance. A PA system for the narrator is recommended for the best effect.
