“THE WELLERMAN” is a traditional New Zealand sea shanty dating from the nineteenth century. It tells the story of a whaling ship awaiting the arrival of the “Wellerman” — a supply ship operated by the Weller brothers, early European traders who established whaling stations around New Zealand. The promised delivery of tea, sugar, rum, and other provisions offered welcome relief to crews during long and demanding voyages.

Although likely sung by whalers rather than aboard merchant sailing ships, The Wellerman shares the repetitive structure and strong rhythmic character of traditional sea shanties, making it well suited to communal singing. Renewed international popularity in the early 2020s introduced the song to a new generation of performers and audiences.
