“WHEN THE SAINTS GO MARCHING IN” is a traditional African American spiritual that emerged in the early 20th century, though its exact origins are uncertain.
The text reflects Christian imagery of the “saints” entering heaven, drawing on biblical themes of salvation, judgement, and eternal rest. Over time, the song became associated with funerals, revival meetings, and celebratory church gatherings, where its uplifting character provided both comfort and communal expression of faith.
“When the saints go marching in” entered wider popular culture in the 1920s and 1930s, when early jazz musicians in New Orleans began adapting spirituals into instrumental and vocal jazz settings. It quickly became a standard in the jazz repertoire, performed and recorded by numerous artists, and is closely associated with the New Orleans tradition of joyful, processional street music.
